Unsettled in Madrid: Growing Doubts Surround Alexander-Arnold’s Future

Expectations were sky-high when Trent Alexander-Arnold arrived at Real Madrid, but early signs have prompted Spanish media to question his long-term future in Spain. Speculation has emerged about a possible return to England, with his situation in Madrid falling short of the promise that accompanied his high-profile move.
Manchester United and Newcastle have been mentioned as potential destinations should he decide to leave. While such links underline his continued reputation in the Premier League, the practicality of a swift return remains uncertain given the scale of his recent transfer and Madrid’s original investment in securing him.
Real Madrid moved decisively to sign Alexander-Arnold when his contract expired, seeing him as one of Europe’s elite full-backs alongside Achraf Hakimi. The club paid a modest fee to ensure his availability for the Club World Cup, viewing him as a long-term solution at right-back after recurring issues in that position.
However, his time in Spain has been disrupted by frequent fitness problems. Limited availability has restricted him to only a handful of league appearances, with minimal impact on the pitch, leading to growing frustration as performances failed to match expectations placed on a player of his pedigree.
Ironically, Alexander-Arnold was recruited to prevent the positional instability that plagued Madrid last season, when midfielders were forced to cover at right-back due to injuries. Yet with both him and Dani Carvajal sidelined again, Real Madrid find themselves facing the same rotation issues, intensifying doubts over whether this move can still deliver the stability the club hoped for.
