Barcelona Enter the Race as Joao Cancelo Weighs His Return to Europe

The competition to secure Joao Cancelo’s signature has intensified as Barcelona step forward to challenge Inter Milan. After Inter reached a verbal understanding with Al-Hilal regarding a potential deal, Barcelona moved quickly by submitting their first proposal, signaling serious intent in the January transfer window.

Cancelo is eager to leave Saudi Arabia after being sidelined in the domestic league and is determined to resume his career in European football. His high salary has complicated negotiations, prompting Inter to explore a creative solution involving a player exchange to make the move financially viable.

Despite Inter’s progress, Cancelo’s personal preference appears to favor Barcelona. The full-back is willing to wait for the Catalan club, and Barcelona responded by offering a loan arrangement that would see them cover only part of his wages, easing the financial burden.

From Inter’s perspective, Cancelo is viewed as a short-term solution to cover for Denzel Dumfries, who is currently sidelined following ankle surgery. The Italian club sees the experienced defender as a reliable option to stabilize their right flank during a critical period of the season.

A move to either club would represent a familiar chapter for the Portuguese international. Cancelo previously played for Inter in the 2017–18 season and later spent the 2023–24 campaign at Barcelona. His potential return to Europe follows his transfer from Manchester City to Al-Hilal in the summer of 2024 for a reported fee of €25 million.
