PSSI Prepares John Herdman on a 2+2 Year Deal to Lead Indonesia’s National Team and U-23 Squad

PSSI is set to officially announce the new head coach of the Indonesian national team in the near future. The formal statement will be delivered directly by PSSI chairman Erick Thohir, marking an important moment for the direction of Indonesian football after weeks of speculation.
The federation has prepared a contract scheme lasting two years with an option for a further two-year extension. This structure is designed to align with the current executive committee’s remaining term, while still allowing flexibility beyond it. The approach reflects lessons learned from previous appointments, where contracts often extended slightly beyond the official leadership period.
PSSI has emphasized that the contract model is meant to avoid creating obligations for future management. By keeping the agreement balanced and transparent, the current leadership hopes to ensure continuity without leaving unexpected responsibilities for the next federation officials.
In addition to leading the senior national team, the new coach is also expected to take charge of an age-group squad. One of the main options under discussion is the Indonesia U-23 team, a move intended to create a clear and consistent football philosophy across levels.
John Herdman has emerged as the leading candidate for the role. The English coach is widely recognized for guiding Canada to qualification for the 2022 World Cup. If appointed, he is expected to bring his own assistants while also working alongside local coaches, with the goal of building long-term synergy between international expertise and domestic development.
