Final World Cup Berths to Be Contested Across Continents as the 48-Team Field Takes Shape
The final stages of the qualifying tournaments across the continents for the 2026 FIFA World Cup (in the US, Canada, and Mexico) will conclude over the next two weeks. Following the two matches scheduled for each team in November, the Group Stage draw will take place on December 5th. This will be followed by the Playoff stage in March of next year.
The competition in the European zone (UEFA) is currently the most attention-grabbing. At the moment, England is the only team that has secured qualification. Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway, and Croatia are all strongly positioned to advance.
Germany faces a "life-and-death" situation in its final two matches, against Luxembourg and Slovakia.
Meanwhile, Italy is almost certainly out of the running for direct qualification, but they are highly unlikely to miss out on the playoff stage. They will have to navigate a perilous playoff bracket to earn a chance to reach the US, Canada, and Mexico.
The following teams have already secured their qualification berths from the Asian zone (AFC): Japan, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
Asia now only has the final playoff spot remaining to be decided, which will be contested between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iraq. The two teams will play a two-legged series this month to determine who claims the final qualification berth.
The following teams have secured direct qualification from the African zone (CAF): Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, Cape Verde, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Tunisia, and Ghana.
Africa now has only one remaining playoff spot up for grabs.
This week, the winners of the two following matches—Nigeria vs. Gabon and Cameroon vs. DR Congo—will then face each other to determine who earns the final playoff berth.
The North, Central American, and Caribbean region (CONCACAF) is currently engaged in the third stage of its group play. There are a total of three groups, each containing four teams. The winner of each group will secure direct qualification, and the two best-performing group runners-up will advance to the inter-confederation playoffs.
Currently, with only two rounds of group matches remaining, the teams leading their respective groups are: Suriname, Jamaica, and Honduras. The teams currently sitting in second place are: Panama, Curaçao, and Costa Rica.
The South American qualification tournament (CONMEBOL) has concluded entirely.
The teams that secured direct qualification are: Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay.Bolivia has advanced to the Inter-confederation Playoff stage.
The Oceania qualification tournament (OFC) has also concluded. New Zealand has secured direct qualification. New Caledonia has advanced to the Inter-confederation Playoff stage.
