CAF Reshapes African Football Calendar with Four-Year AFCON and Annual Nations League

CAF Reshapes African Football Calendar with Four-Year AFCON and Annual Nations League
The Confederation of African Football has announced a major overhaul of its international competition structure by moving the Africa Cup of Nations to a four-year cycle starting in 2028. At the same time, CAF will introduce a new African Nations League that will be held every year, marking a significant shift in how national team football is organized on the continent.

Under the revised calendar, the 2027 AFCON hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will proceed as scheduled. The following tournament, initially planned for 2029, will instead take place in 2028, with the next edition set for 2032. This adjustment is designed to create space for the inaugural African Nations League, which is expected to begin in 2029.

The new Nations League will involve all 54 CAF member associations and will be structured around four geographical zones. Matches are planned for September and October, with a final stage held in November, ensuring that competitive international football takes place in Africa every year without overloading the calendar.

Scheduling has long been a challenge for African football, with previous AFCON tournaments often moved to avoid clashes with global competitions. The revised format is intended to reduce conflicts with events such as the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, while also aligning AFCON with other major continental tournaments like the UEFA European Championship.

By introducing an annual competition alongside a four-year AFCON cycle, CAF aims to secure more consistent resources and greater visibility for African football. The new structure is expected to keep top African players engaged with the continent on a regular basis while strengthening coordination with FIFA and other stakeholders worldwide.
