PSSI Moves Closer to Appointing John Herdman as Indonesia’s New National Team Coach

The long-running uncertainty surrounding the next head coach of the Indonesian national football team is beginning to clear. Following an Executive Committee meeting of PSSI, John Herdman has emerged as the preferred choice to take over the role, marking a significant step toward a new era for the national side.
Earlier, PSSI had confirmed that two final candidates would be discussed by the Executive Committee after an initial shortlist of five coaches was evaluated during meetings in England. Although the federation initially kept the names confidential, strong indications pointed to John Herdman and Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the final contenders, with Herdman ultimately gaining broader internal support.
The Executive Committee meeting took place sooner than originally planned, being held on December 17–18, 2025, in Jakarta. This was confirmed by PSSI Vice Chairman Zainudin Amali, who explained that most committee members agreed on selecting Herdman. While the specific voting details were not disclosed, the meeting was considered valid and met the required quorum.
Structurally, PSSI’s decision-making process involved its 12 Executive Committee members, supported by the federation’s leadership under Chairman Erick Thohir. Although the general secretary does not hold voting rights, the committee’s approval signaled that Herdman is set to replace Patrick Kluivert, pending further procedural steps.
Despite the approval, the appointment has not yet been finalized. PSSI is still engaged in negotiations with Herdman, as both sides must agree on contractual terms. The federation aims to conclude the process by late December or January, allowing the new coach sufficient time to prepare the national team for the FIFA Series 2026 matches scheduled for March.
