Courtois Dismisses Rumors of Dressing Room Rift as Xabi Alonso Eyes Possible Liverpool Return

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has pushed back against rumors suggesting that the squad played a role in the departure of former head coach Xabi Alonso. Speculation had circulated that tensions between the coach and the players led to his exit from Real Madrid, but Courtois insisted that the team maintained a professional relationship with the manager throughout his tenure.
The Belgian goalkeeper explained that the squad remained focused on their responsibilities and never attempted to undermine the coach. According to him, reports about dissatisfaction with tactical instructions or lengthy video analysis sessions were exaggerated. He emphasized that players at the highest level are accustomed to detailed preparation and understand that such routines are essential in elite football.
Courtois also pointed out that similar analytical approaches are common under many managers. He referenced experiences with coaches who regularly organized long tactical meetings, noting that studying match footage is a normal part of preparation for professional athletes. For top teams competing at the highest level, reviewing strategy and opponent tendencies is simply part of the job.
Alonso’s departure from Real Madrid occurred by mutual agreement roughly two months ago. Since then, the former Spanish midfielder has been linked with a possible return to coaching. His name has emerged in discussions surrounding a potential managerial change at Liverpool F.C., where he previously spent several successful seasons as a player.
The Premier League club had shown strong interest in Alonso when he was managing Bayer Leverkusen, although negotiations did not progress at the time. With Alonso currently without a club, the situation could change if Liverpool decides to move on from current manager Arne Slot. Such a scenario would open the door for a possible reunion between Alonso and the club where he once played a key role in midfield.
