Rising Dutch-Indonesian Forward Dean Zandbergen Open to Representing Indonesia

Dean Zandbergen has expressed strong interest in representing the Indonesia national team in the future. The 23-year-old forward has been following the growing number of players with Indonesian heritage who have chosen to play for the national side. Seeing their journey has made the possibility of wearing the Indonesian jersey feel exciting for him, as he believes it would be a meaningful step in his career.
The opportunity may not be entirely out of reach, as there has already been communication between Zandbergen and officials from the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI). Initial contact reportedly came through several staff members, opening the door for potential discussions about his eligibility. However, the process still requires further document verification before any naturalization steps could move forward.
Indonesia has been searching for a true central striker, and Zandbergen believes he could fill that role. After watching several matches of the national team, he noticed that many players used in the striker position are not traditional center-forwards. With his natural position as a number nine, he hopes there could eventually be an opportunity for him to contribute to the squad.
Standing at 188 centimeters, Zandbergen is known for his strength in aerial duels and his pace as a forward. His playing style is described as explosive, supported by good vision and a strong presence inside the penalty area. While his main role is as a striker, he is also capable of playing on the wing, particularly on the left side where he can cut inside and create threats near the opponent’s goal.
Zandbergen also has a personal connection to Indonesia through his mother’s family, who live in Depok. He has visited the country before as a teenager and felt an immediate sense of familiarity with the people and culture. Currently playing for VVV-Venlo in the Dutch second division, he has made 30 appearances for the club and recorded three goals along with two assists this season, continuing to develop as a promising attacking option.
