The situation escalated following increased conflict between Iran and the United States. Relations between the two nations deteriorated further after a military strike ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump the previous month. The growing instability created uncertainty around Iran’s involvement in the upcoming World Cup, which is scheduled to take place during the summer.

Before the political crisis intensified, Iran had already earned its place in the global tournament through the qualification process.
