Galatasaray Sanctioned After Crowd Trouble Mars Champions League Clash with Juventus

Tensions ran high in Turin when Galatasaray met Juventus in the second leg of the 2025/26 Champions League play-off. What was supposed to be a decisive European night quickly turned controversial, as disorder outside the stadium overshadowed much of the action on the pitch. The fallout has now resulted in disciplinary action from European football authorities.

The governing body imposed a €40,000 fine on Galatasaray and banned their supporters from attending the club’s next away match in the Champions League. The punishment followed crowd disturbances that occurred at Juventus’ Allianz Stadium on February 25. The decision reflects the seriousness of the security breaches and the potential risks posed to public safety during the event.

Trouble reportedly began when around 50 Galatasaray supporters attempted to enter the stadium without valid tickets. In the process, barriers were damaged, and vehicles transporting fans from the city center to the venue were affected. The situation escalated further when a firework was thrown toward the Curva Nord section, injuring a man and his young daughter, both of whom required hospital treatment. The incident intensified concerns over stadium security and fan behavior.

Authorities later identified and detained the individual responsible for throwing the firework as he was leaving the stadium after the final whistle. Clashes between Galatasaray supporters and local police had already taken place before kickoff, contributing to an atmosphere of unrest throughout the evening. On the sporting side, Juventus managed to overturn a heavy first-leg deficit with a 3-2 victory after extra time, but the Italian club still fell short on aggregate and was eliminated.

As a result of the sanctions, Galatasaray will have to face Liverpool in the Champions League quarterfinal without the backing of their traveling supporters. The disciplinary measures are intended to reinforce the importance of safety and sportsmanship in European competitions, serving as a reminder that off-field behavior can carry significant consequences for clubs competing at the highest level.
