Injury Crisis Hits Italy as Seven Players Risk Missing World Cup 2026 Play-Off

Italy national football team faces a difficult build-up to the decisive play-off stage for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after several key players were ruled out through injury. The situation comes despite a moment of optimism when young striker Francesco Pio Esposito scored against Norway national football team during the qualification match at San Siro, a goal that briefly revived the team’s hopes.

Head coach Gennaro Gattuso must now prepare his squad for a crucial play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland national football team scheduled for late March in Bergamo. The winner of that match will advance to a decisive final against either Wales national football team or Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team for a place in the upcoming World Cup.

Italy’s preparations have been complicated by the absence of several important players due to injuries. Midfield star Marco Verratti is among those unavailable, along with Giovanni Leoni, Matteo Gabbia, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Destiny Udogie, Nicolò Rovella, and Antonio Vergara, leaving the coaching staff with limited options for such an important stage.

There remains some optimism regarding a few players who could still recover in time. Di Lorenzo, who has accumulated more than fifty international appearances, may return before the play-off matches. Udogie is also expected to regain fitness soon and potentially play again with Tottenham Hotspur FC before the international break.

Additional concerns initially surrounded defenders Alessandro Bastoni and Riccardo Calafiori, though updates suggest their situations are less serious. Bastoni’s injury has been described as minor, while Calafiori has resumed training with Arsenal FC. Even so, several injured players are still unlikely to recover in time, placing Italy under heavy pressure as they attempt to avoid missing the World Cup for a third consecutive tournament.
