Team News
Lille arrive in this Europa League knockout play-off second leg with real belief after a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the first leg at Villa Park. They sit comfortably in the top half of Ligue 1 and have been very strong at home in Europe this season (unbeaten in their last five home European matches). No major new injury concerns: Jonathan David is fit again and remains their biggest goal threat (double-digit goals this season), while midfielders André Gomes and Angel Gomes are both available. Expect Bruno Génésio to deploy a high-pressing 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 with Lucas Chevalier in goal, a back four featuring Tiago Santos and Ismaily, midfield anchored by Benjamin André and Nabil Bentaleb, and attack led by David, Edon Zhegrova and Ivan Cavaleiro or Yusuf Yazıcı. Lille will press aggressively from the front, overload the flanks and look to exploit Villa’s high defensive line in front of a passionate Stade Pierre-Mauroy crowd.

Aston Villa travel with the tie still very much alive after the 1-1 first-leg draw. They sit inside the Premier League top four and have been dangerous in transition this season, but their away form in Europe has been inconsistent (only two wins in last five European away games). Key absence: defender Pau Torres is doubtful (hamstring), while Boubacar Kamara remains sidelined long-term. Ollie Watkins is fit and in top form. Expect Unai Emery to field a balanced 4-2-3-1 with Emiliano Martínez in goal, a back four featuring Ezri Konsa and Diego Carlos, midfield anchored by Youri Tielemans and Douglas Luiz, and attack led by Watkins, supported by Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby or Jhon Durán on the wings. Villa will aim to stay compact, absorb pressure and hit on quick counters through Bailey’s pace and Watkins’ finishing.

Head to Head Analysis
This is only the second competitive meeting between the clubs. The first leg at Villa Park ended 1-1 in a very tight, tactical game – both teams scored once, with Lille showing great counter-attacking threat and Villa dominating large spells without converting enough chances. Historically the fixture is brand new, but Lille have an excellent recent record against English sides at home (unbeaten in their last four European home games vs Premier League opposition, scoring in every one). Matches involving Lille at home tend to be high-intensity and goal-filled when they push forward (over 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 home European games), while Villa have struggled to keep clean sheets away against aggressive pressing teams. Expect another end-to-end contest – Lille will chase the game early, while Villa are dangerous on the break and from set pieces.

Prediction
The Stade Pierre-Mauroy will be a cauldron and Lille’s home intensity, high pressing and counter-attacking quality give them a real chance to turn the tie. They are perfectly suited to punish any mistakes from Villa’s high line, and David’s experience in big games should make the difference in tight moments. Villa have plenty of quality to hurt on the counter (Bailey pace, Watkins finishing), but their poor away defensive record in knockout ties and the need to defend a slim aggregate lead expose them to Lille’s pressure. This should be an open, high-tempo clash with chances at both ends – Lille likely to score first and force Villa to chase, leading to a high-scoring affair. Very tight tie, but the home advantage and current momentum tip it to the French side.

Final Prediction: Lille win 2-1 (aggregate 3-2). Home side to progress – around 60% confidence in a Lille victory on the night, with both teams to score and over 2.5 goals very likely.
