Team News
Paris Saint-Germain arrive at the Parc des Princes in excellent shape, sitting top of Ligue 1 with the league’s most potent attack and an unbeaten home record in the Champions League this season. They come into this quarter-final first leg after a comfortable weekend win, with confidence high. Injuries are minimal: only Presnel Kimpembe remains sidelined long-term (Achilles), while Ousmane Dembélé is back fit and expected to start. Expect Luis Enrique to field a very strong 4-3-3 with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, a back four featuring Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes pushing high, midfield trio Vitinha, Warren Zaïre-Emery and João Neves, and the front three of Bradley Barcola, Gonçalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembélé (or Randal Kolo Muani). PSG will dominate possession, press aggressively and overload the flanks with pace and creativity in front of a packed, noisy home crowd.
Chelsea are pushing hard for a top-four finish in the Premier League and have shown real maturity in knockout football this season. Their recent form has been strong (unbeaten in seven across competitions), but they have struggled to keep clean sheets away against elite attacks. No major new injury concerns: Reece James is fit again and should start, while Wesley Fofana remains the only long-term absentee. Expect Enzo Maresca to deploy a solid 4-2-3-1 with Robert Sánchez in goal, a back four featuring Malo Gusto, Tosin Adarabioyo, Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella, midfield anchored by Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández, and attack led by Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk supporting Nicolas Jackson. Chelsea will aim to stay compact, win duels in midfield and hit on quick counters.
Head to Head Analysis
These two European heavyweights have met 13 times in competitive matches, with Chelsea holding a slight edge (6 wins to PSG’s 4, 3 draws). In the Champions League, Chelsea have won three of the last four encounters (including the 2021 semi-final aggregate 3-0). At the Parc des Princes, however, PSG have never lost to Chelsea (two wins, one draw), often dominating possession and creating high-quality chances. Recent clashes have been open and high-scoring: four of the last five produced over 2.5 goals, with both teams scoring in most games. PSG usually control tempo at home and exploit wide overloads, while Chelsea are dangerous on the counter and from set pieces. Expect a high-intensity battle with chances at both ends, but PSG’s home momentum and attacking quality should give them the edge in this first leg.
Prediction
The Parc des Princes will be a cauldron and PSG’s relentless pressing, attacking fluency and home intensity make them slight favourites in this first leg. They are very dangerous when they can overload the flanks with Hakimi/Mendes and Dembélé/Barcola pace, and their midfield control (Vitinha, Zaïre-Emery) should allow them to dictate large spells. Chelsea are extremely well-organised under Maresca, remain dangerous on the break (Palmer, Jackson threat) and have shown composure in big away games, but they have occasionally been caught out by aggressive pressing sides. This should be an open, entertaining quarter-final clash with goals from transitions, combinations and individual moments. Very tight call, but PSG’s home advantage and current attacking form tip the balance narrowly in their favour.
Final Prediction: PSG win 2-1 (or 3-2). Home side to take a slim advantage – around 60% confidence in a PSG victory, with both teams to score and over 2.5 goals very likely in this blockbuster.
