Team News
Bayer Leverkusen remain in excellent shape under Xabi Alonso, sitting 2nd in the Bundesliga with the league’s best attack and an unbeaten home record in all competitions this season at the BayArena. They come into this UCL knockout playoff second leg after a strong domestic win at the weekend, but the 2-2 first-leg draw at the Emirates leaves the tie wide open. Injuries are light: only long-term absentee Exequiel Palacios (muscle) is missing, while Florian Wirtz is fully fit again and expected to start. Expect a very attacking 3-4-2-1 with Lukas Hradecky in goal, a back three featuring Jonathan Tah, Edmond Tapsoba and Piero Hincapié, wing-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo pushing high, midfield control from Granit Xhaka and Robert Andrich, and attacking duo Florian Wirtz and Nathan Tella supporting Patrik Schick or Victor Boniface up top. Leverkusen will press intensely, overload the flanks and look to exploit Arsenal’s high line early.

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League with the best defensive record in the division and remain unbeaten in their last 10 away games across competitions. The first-leg draw was frustrating after dominating large spells, but they travel with confidence. No major new injuries: Declan Rice is fit again after a minor knock, while Takehiro Tomiyasu remains the only long-term absentee. Expect Mikel Arteta to deploy a strong 4-3-3 with David Raya in goal, a back four featuring Ben White, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães and Jurriën Timber, midfield trio Thomas Partey, Rice and Martin Ødegaard, and the front three of Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli (or Leandro Trossard). Arsenal will aim to control possession, press in coordinated blocks and exploit spaces behind Leverkusen’s high defensive line.

Head to Head Analysis
This is only the second competitive meeting between the clubs. The first leg at the Emirates ended 2-2 in an open, high-quality game – both teams scored twice, with Leverkusen showing their threat on the counter and Arsenal dominating large spells without converting enough chances. Historically the fixture is rare, but Leverkusen have never lost to Arsenal (one previous friendly win). At the BayArena, Leverkusen are almost unbeatable in European knockout ties against non-top-tier sides, winning their last nine home Europa League/Champions League games with an aggregate score heavily in their favour. Matches involving these teams have been goal-filled when Leverkusen dominate possession – over 2.5 goals in the first leg and in most recent Leverkusen home European games. Expect another high-tempo, end-to-end battle with plenty of transitions and individual moments likely to decide the outcome.

Prediction
The BayArena will be rocking and Leverkusen’s home intensity, attacking fluency and set-piece threat give them a real edge in this second leg. They are very dangerous when they can press high and exploit spaces behind Arsenal’s high defensive line – Frimpong and Grimaldo’s overlapping runs, Wirtz’s creativity and Schick/Boniface’s finishing should create plenty of chances. Arsenal are the more complete side on paper, remain dangerous on the counter (Saka, Martinelli pace) and have shown maturity in big away games, but they have occasionally been caught out by aggressive pressing sides at home and away. The tie is perfectly balanced after the first leg – this should be another open, entertaining clash with goals at both ends. Very tight call, but Leverkusen’s home momentum and extra aggression in knockout football tip the balance narrowly in their favour.

Final Prediction: Bayer Leverkusen win 2-1 (or 3-2 after extra time). Home side to progress – around 60% confidence in a Leverkusen victory, with both teams to score and over 2.5 goals very likely
