Iran’s World Cup 2026 Spot in Doubt as Four Nations Stand Ready to Step In

Iran’s World Cup 2026 Spot in Doubt as Four Nations Stand Ready to Step In

Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup has come under serious uncertainty following military strikes by the United States and Israel on its territory. The escalating geopolitical tension has cast a shadow over the national team’s future in the tournament. Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s football federation, indicated that the final decision regarding the team’s involvement will rest with the country’s sports authorities. He acknowledged that it remains unclear whether Iran will ultimately compete, especially given that all of its group-stage matches are scheduled to take place in the United States.

Iran had been drawn into Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt, with matches set to be hosted entirely on American soil. The 2026 World Cup itself will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from mid-June to mid-July. However, the current political climate has made preparations increasingly complicated for Team Melli. FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström has emphasized that the organization is closely monitoring developments to ensure the safety and security of all participating teams.

Should Iran withdraw, Iraq appears to be the strongest candidate to take its place. As the Asian team that progressed the furthest in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers without securing automatic qualification, Iraq would be a logical replacement. If selected, Iraq would not need to go through the intercontinental playoff round scheduled for March 2026, simplifying the transition into the tournament lineup.

The United Arab Emirates stands as another viable alternative. Having advanced to the fifth round of the Asian qualifiers, the UAE could step in directly if Iraq declines the opportunity. In that scenario, the Emirati side could either replace Iran outright or assume Iraq’s slot in the playoff stage. Oman is also in consideration after reaching the fourth round of qualification and earning a point during that phase, positioning itself as a third backup option.

Indonesia, despite failing to collect points in the fourth round of Asian qualification, remains a distant but possible contender. While its chances are slimmer compared to the other three nations, FIFA holds the authority to make a final selection if higher-ranked alternatives are unable or unwilling to participate. With uncertainty still surrounding Iran’s status, the evolving situation adds an unexpected layer of intrigue to the road toward the 2026 World Cup.
