Indonesia’s Slim World Cup Dream as Iran’s 2026 Spot Hangs in the Balance

Uncertainty has emerged over the participation of Iran national football team at the FIFA World Cup 2026 following escalating geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Israel. Reports suggest that the ongoing conflict could prevent Iran from taking part in the tournament, raising questions about potential replacements should the team officially withdraw.
According to statements attributed to federation president Mehdi Taj, the likelihood of Iran competing has diminished amid the current situation. The matter ultimately rests with national sports authorities, but concerns are mounting given that one of the tournament’s host nations is the United States. The political climate adds a complex layer to what would otherwise be a purely sporting event.
Complicating matters further, all of Iran’s scheduled group-stage matches are set to be played on American soil. Drawn in Group G, Iran were due to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles before traveling to Seattle to meet Egypt. With matches concentrated in the United States, logistical and diplomatic challenges could prove difficult to overcome if tensions remain unresolved.
In the event of a withdrawal, attention has shifted to possible replacement teams from Asia. Indonesia national football team has been mentioned in discussions, but its chances appear limited. Reports indicate that Indonesia would only be considered as a fourth alternative, behind Iraq national football team, United Arab Emirates national football team, and Oman national football team.
Iraq currently stands as the strongest candidate due to its position in the inter-confederation playoffs. Should Iraq receive the nod, the United Arab Emirates could step into the playoff pathway, while Oman would also rank ahead of Indonesia based on stronger results in the later stages of Asian qualification. Considering these factors, Indonesia’s hopes of securing a surprise ticket to the 2026 World Cup remain extremely slim unless multiple higher-ranked alternatives decline the opportunity.
