Team News
Lyon have turned into one of the form teams in Europe this season. Under Paulo Fonseca (and now caretaker Pierre Sage after recent changes), they sit comfortably inside the top 8 of the Europa League table and come into this game on the back of a six-match unbeaten run across all competitions. Their home record at the Groupama Stadium is excellent – they have won four of their last five European home games, scoring at least twice in each. Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette are in sparkling form (combined 15 goal involvements in the competition), while Georges Mikautadze adds extra firepower from the bench. Only minor doubts over Malick Fofana and Nemanja Matić – both expected to be fit. Lyon will line up in their usual attacking 4-2-3-1 and look to dominate possession from the first whistle.
PAOK have been solid defensively in the league phase (only 6 goals conceded in 7 games), but their away performances have been patchy – just one win on the road in Europe this season and they have failed to score in three of their last five away fixtures. Razvan Lucescu is without key midfielder Thomas Murg (suspended) and winger Kiril Despodov is a major doubt with a hamstring problem. Andrija Živković and veteran Vieirinha will carry most of the creative threat, but PAOK will almost certainly set up in a deep 5-4-1/3-5-2 to frustrate Lyon and look for counters or set pieces. They are tough to break down but lack real cutting edge without their best attackers fully fit.
Head to Head Analysis
The sides have met only once before, in the 2014 Europa League group stage. Lyon won both games that season (1-0 away, 3-0 at home) and have never lost to Greek opposition in European competition (5 wins, 2 draws). PAOK have a poor record in France – winless in their last six visits (5 losses, 1 draw) and have scored just once in those matches. When these styles clash, Lyon’s technical quality and home intensity usually overwhelm compact Greek sides. Recent Lyon home games in Europe average over 3 goals, while PAOK away games in this competition have been low-scoring (under 2.5 in four of their last five).
Prediction
Everything points to a comfortable Lyon victory. The French side are simply too strong at home, in excellent form, and have far superior attacking options. PAOK can keep it respectable for an hour with their disciplined shape, but once Lyon find the breakthrough (most likely through Cherki or Lacazette), the floodgates should open. Expect Lyon to control the game and win convincingly without needing to get out of second gear.
Final Prediction: Lyon win 3-0 (or 2-0). Very confident home win – 75% confidence level. Over 2.5 goals very likely.
