AC Milan Struggle to Secure Defensive Reinforcements Amid Tough January Market

AC Milan are facing significant obstacles in their attempt to strengthen the heart of their defense during the January transfer window. The club’s management is keen to meet Max Allegri’s request for an experienced centre-back, but progress has been slow due to resistance from several major European clubs. As the season reaches a critical phase, the lack of defensive depth has become an increasing concern.
Several high-profile targets have already proven difficult to pursue. Players such as Milan Škriniar and Joe Gomez were identified as ideal solutions, yet their respective clubs remain unwilling to part with key defenders midway through the campaign. Similar situations have arisen with Federico Gatti and Kim Min-jae, whose current teams view them as indispensable to their tactical plans.
AC Milan’s interest in Chelsea defender Axel Disasi has also hit a roadblock. Negotiations have stalled due to Chelsea’s insistence on including a mandatory purchase clause in any potential loan deal. This condition has complicated discussions, as Milan are cautious about committing to long-term financial obligations without flexibility.
With primary targets proving elusive, the Rossoneri have begun exploring alternative options. Names such as Nathan Aké, Murillo, and Diego Coppola have entered internal discussions, though none have yet emerged as a clear priority. The uncertainty reflects the difficulty of finding the right balance between quality, availability, and financial feasibility in a crowded winter market.
The current situation is partly a consequence of failing to sign a seasoned centre-back during the previous summer window. That missed opportunity has forced Milan into a more aggressive approach in January, despite the well-known challenges of mid-season transfers. Many clubs are reluctant to sell defensive pillars while fixtures pile up, making Milan’s search increasingly complex as time continues to tick away.
