Team Reviews
Newcastle United
Newcastle are very strong at home this season, especially in domestic cup competitions. They have convincingly beaten several Championship and League One sides in the Carabao Cup so far (typical scores 3-0 or 4-1). In the league they are also starting to stabilize after a difficult start to the season.
Key strengths at St. James' Park:
The atmosphere at night is on another level – it can make opponents nervous
Anthony Gordon & Alexander Isak are very sharp in fast transitions
Eddie Howe's high pressing makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back
Favourite formation 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, with Bruno Guimarães & Joelinton as the backbone in midfield. Major injuries only in defence (Botman & Lascelles long-term), but the front line is at full strength. Newcastle really want to win this cup – a domestic trophy is a realistic target this season.
Manchester City
City have been somewhat up and down this season compared to their usual standard, but they remain the most feared team in all competitions. In the Carabao Cup they usually rotate heavily because the league and Champions League are the priority, but they still play key players like Haaland, Foden, De Bruyne (if fit), Grealish.
Strengths:
If City play their best XI (Haaland, Foden, De Bruyne, Gvardiol, Rodri), their quality is still far superior
But if they rotate heavily again (which has happened often in cups this season), they can lose to Championship sides
City have quite a few injuries this season in defence & midfield (Stones, Akanji, Rodri sometimes rotated), but the front line remains deadly.
Head to Head (Recent Carabao Cup & League)
Last Carabao Cup meeting: Newcastle famously beat City in the 2023 final (2-1 after extra time) – very sweet memory for Magpies fans
League this season: City won 3-1 at Etihad (Haaland hat-trick)
At St. James' Park last season: 1-1 draw (City injury-time goal)
Trend: 4 out of 5 recent meetings over 2.5 goals, both teams often score
Prediction
This is a very open match with high potential for many goals. Newcastle are very strong at home + the St. James' Park atmosphere at night can make City uncomfortable if their press fails. But if City play their best XI (Haaland, Foden, De Bruyne, Gvardiol, Rodri), their quality is still much higher.
