Paul Pogba Returns to Professional Football After an 800-Day Wait

Paul Pogba finally stepped back onto the pitch after more than 800 days away from professional football, marking an emotional milestone in his long road back. His absence began in 2023 when he tested positive for a banned substance, a case that led to a lengthy legal and disciplinary process. Although the initial punishment sidelined him for four years, his successful appeal shortened the ban and opened the door for his return in early 2025.
Following his reinstatement, Pogba joined AS Monaco as a free agent after parting ways with Juventus. Despite signing in the summer, he was kept out of competitive action for months as Monaco’s medical team prioritized a gradual reconditioning plan. With two full years away from high-level football, the club opted for a cautious approach to protect him from physical setbacks and reintegrate him steadily into the squad.
His long-awaited comeback arrived in the match between Rennes and AS Monaco, where he featured as a late substitute. The appearance marked his first competitive minutes since 2023, a moment he had worked toward throughout his suspension. Although Monaco suffered a heavy defeat, the match still represented a personal breakthrough for the French midfielder.
Pogba expressed mixed emotions afterward, balancing the joy of returning with frustration over the team’s result. He acknowledged the need for further work to reach full match fitness but embraced the challenge ahead. His comeback not only closed a difficult chapter but also signaled the start of a fresh attempt to rebuild his career at the top level.
