CONMEBOL President Proposes One-Time Expansion of 2030 World Cup to 64 Teams

CONMEBOL President Proposes One-Time Expansion of 2030 World Cup to 64 Teams
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez has reiterated his proposal to expand the 2030 FIFA World Cup to include 64 teams, but stressed that this significant increase would be for that centenary edition only.

Domínguez argued that the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup warrants an extraordinary celebration. He stated that "something special must be done on the 100th anniversary of the World Cup," and for this reason, he believes it is an opportunity to do something different and host a World Cup that unites the world, just this once.

The president explained his aspiration, saying he dreams of a World Cup with 64 teams, believing it to be a great chance to unite the world, bring football to more people, and hold a completely different kind of celebration.

The proposed expansion would see more than a quarter of FIFA's 210 men's national teams participating. This move, however, could risk diminishing the significance of the qualification process for many continental confederations.
