Haaland Downplays Record Hype: 'I'm a Decent Player,' Doesn't Want Messi and Ronaldo Comparisons

Manchester City star striker Erling Haaland has maintained a humble perspective on his prolific scoring records and pushed back against comparisons to football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
When questioned about his long list of broken records, Haaland emphasized his focus on team objectives over personal milestones. "Why should I think about potential records? For me, the most important thing is to help the team get three points," he said. "My main goal is to score goals and help the team win trophies. If the records happen along the way, that’s great. But I don’t think about those things—it's never good to have too much stuff in your head."
Regarding his own ability, Haaland offered a modest assessment. "I think I’m a decent player," he stated, before making it clear why he distances himself from the debate of being compared to the all-time greats.
"Messi and Ronaldo should be placed on their own level," Haaland insisted. "They competed at the highest level for 15 years, and no one is close to them. Their competition against each other, the goals they scored, the trophies they won, and the records they kept breaking—it’s all incredible. So, I really don’t want to be compared to them."
He concluded that he prefers to focus on his own progression and avoid the pressure of matching their legacy. "If you start comparing yourself to them, there will be no fun—it's too difficult. It’s better for me to stay in the background and not have too many people focused on me."
