The Reds’ defensive situation has become increasingly fragile following a series of setbacks. Giovanni Leoni has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury, leaving Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as the only fit senior centre-backs. While the pair formed a formidable partnership during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign in 2019–20, Gomez has spent recent seasons playing more often as a full-back, raising questions about his consistency in the central role.
