Andre Onana Set to Leave Manchester United on Loan as Trabzonspor Steps In

Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United has become increasingly uncertain, with the goalkeeper reportedly pushed toward a loan move to Turkish club Trabzonspor. The two clubs have reached a verbal agreement, but the transfer still awaits final approval from Onana himself. Trabzonspor urgently needs a new goalkeeper after losing their captain Ugurcan Cakir to Galatasaray for €36 million this summer.
Onana’s time at Old Trafford has seen a sharp decline, as he was left out of the first three Premier League matches and only featured in an EFL Cup game against Grimsby Town, which ended in disappointment. The club cited fitness issues as the reason for his limited involvement, but the signing of young goalkeeper Senne Lammens for £18 million has further complicated Onana’s standing. With Altay Bayindir already in the squad, Onana’s place as backup goalkeeper looks increasingly tenuous.
The situation is also strained off the pitch, with reports of a fractured relationship between Onana and the club management. After Manchester United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League last season, Onana was asked to accept a 25 percent salary cut, which he rejected by requesting a new contract with a higher wage. This stance reportedly upset both the head coach and the club’s directors, especially given Onana’s mixed performances, conceding 65 goals in 50 appearances last season.
As most European transfer windows have closed, Onana’s options are limited, making the Turkish league’s transfer window, open until mid-September, a last opportunity. Trabzonspor has prioritized securing Onana to fill the void left by their former captain. If the loan goes through, attention will turn to Lammens and Bayindir competing for the goalkeeping spot at Manchester United, though doubts remain among fans about their readiness to take on the role.
