Fenerbahce Drops Jose Mourinho After Champions League Setback and Turbulent Tenure

Fenerbahce officially parted ways with head coach Jose Mourinho shortly after the team failed to advance to the Champions League group stage, losing to Benfica in the qualifying playoffs. Mourinho had been appointed at the start of the 2024-25 season, following a second-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig the previous year. Despite initial promise, the club decided to end his tenure amid growing frustration over recent results.
Mourinho’s time in Turkey was marked by controversy as well as challenges. He faced accusations of making racist remarks from rival Galatasaray, which he denied and countered with legal action. He was also vocal in criticizing refereeing standards in the league, resulting in multiple suspensions. A notable incident involved a physical altercation with Galatasaray’s coach, which led to further disciplinary action.
While Mourinho boasts a decorated career with multiple Champions League titles, his stint at Fenerbahce did not yield any trophies. The team fell short in domestic cup finals and exited the Europa League earlier than hoped. Despite a decent start to the current season, the club’s failure to qualify for Europe’s top competition was a critical blow.
Fenerbahce’s swift decision to sack Mourinho comes shortly after rival Besiktas dismissed their own coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Mourinho’s tenure lasted less than a year, during which he faced significant pressure and unrest both on and off the pitch. The club now looks ahead, hoping to regroup and rebuild following a disappointing chapter under the famed Portuguese coach.
