Villarreal head to Anfield for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday night, hoping to pull off another stunning surprise.
In the quarter-finals, Jurgen Klopp's team overcame Benfica 6-4 on aggregate. The Reds come into the first leg against Villarreal on the back of a three-game winning streak in all competitions, during which they have scored a total of nine goals. They had also won 20 of their previous 23 games, and had only lost once at home in the previous eight months. The first leg on Wednesday will be Liverpool's seventh game in a demanding April calendar.
The Yellow Submarine knocked Bayern Munich out of the competition to reach the last four. Since losing to Manchester United in September, Villarreal has won three and drawn one of its four Champions League away games. Villarreal has scored in all four of their away games in the competition thus far. But the team have lost five of their previous 10 matches, and they had only four victories on the road in 2022.
Villarreal thrashed Juventus at home and made a success at the Allianz Arena. There's no reason for the traveling party to think that another memorable win. Gerard Moreno's goalscoring and playmaking abilities will be a major loss for Villarreal at Anfield, and we anticipate Liverpool to finally break the Yellow Submarine's resistance and take a first-leg lead.
