Ter Stegen Suffers Setback; Ruled Out of Spanish Super Cup

In a major blow to Barcelona’s trophy ambitions, Marc-André ter Stegen has been ruled out of the Spanish Super Cup following a physical setback during Tuesday’s training session in Jeddah. According to journalist Carlos Monfort, the German goalkeeper was forced to leave the pitch approximately 25 minutes early after experiencing an unexpected fitness issue. Further medical assessments confirmed that he would be unavailable for the tournament, leaving Hansi Flick without his captain and first-choice goalkeeper for the high-stakes matches ahead.
In immediate response to the crisis, Barcelona has called up Diego Kochen from Barça Atlètic to join the first-team squad in Saudi Arabia. The young American goalkeeper was reportedly notified on Tuesday evening and is expected to fly out on Wednesday morning. Despite the last-minute travel, the club believes Kochen will arrive in time to be integrated into the squad for the upcoming matches, serving as the primary backup to Iñaki Peña, who is now set to start in goal.
This latest injury adds to a frustrating period for Ter Stegen, who has struggled with recurring fitness issues over the past year. His absence places significant pressure on Iñaki Peña to replicate the solid form he has occasionally shown as a deputy. With the club currently chasing silverware on multiple fronts, the coaching staff must now rely on their depth between the posts to navigate a challenging Super Cup bracket without their most experienced defensive leader.
