Record: Benfica Targets New Striker to Bolster Mourinho’s Attacking Options
According to a front-page report from the Portuguese daily Record, José Mourinho is planning to refine his squad during the January transfer window. While the "Special One" does not intend to oversee a massive overhaul, he has identified the need for a new center-forward to increase the tactical diversity of Benfica’s frontline.

Following a significant €20 million investment in Igor Ivanović last summer, the club’s management is reportedly prepared to provide further financial backing to secure a profile different from the strikers currently at Mourinho’s disposal. The goal is to offer the manager a more versatile attacking rotation as they navigate a demanding domestic and European schedule.

The arrival of a new striker will likely signal the departure of academy graduate Henrique Araújo. Since Mourinho’s return to the Estádio da Luz in early September, the young forward has struggled for consistent minutes, appearing only five times—mostly as a late tactical substitute. His longest stint under Mourinho came in the Taça de Portugal against Atlético CP, where he played just 12 minutes. With a new reinforcement looming, Benfica is expected to facilitate a move for Araújo to ensure he gains the regular playing time necessary for his development.
