After 33 Years in Coaching, Lucien Favre Announces Retirement
Lucien Favre, former head coach of Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach, has officially decided to retire from professional football coaching, concluding a career spanning 33 years. His retirement marks the end of a long and influential presence in European football.

Favre’s coaching journey included stints in Switzerland, Germany, and France, where he developed a reputation for nurturing talent and achieving consistent results. His longest tenure was at Borussia Monchengladbach, lasting three and a half years with 189 matches and an average of 1.65 points per game. During this period, he guided the team to the UEFA Champions League in the 2012/13 season and helped players like Marco Reus, Marc-André ter Stegen, and Granit Xhaka rise to prominence.

In Germany, Favre’s most notable achievement came with Borussia Dortmund, where he secured the DFL-Supercup in the 2019/20 season. His tactical acumen and ability to manage top-level squads earned him recognition as one of the most respected coaches in European football.

Favre also had a stint in Ligue 1 with OGC Nice, taking charge in the summer of 2022. However, his time in France ended in January 2023 after the club struggled to achieve satisfactory results, leaving him without a managerial role since then.

Reflecting on his career, Favre acknowledged the intensity of his professional life and the passage of time, noting that at 68 years old, he now feels it is the right moment to step away. His retirement closes a significant chapter in football, leaving behind a legacy of tactical innovation, player development, and consistent leadership across multiple top-flight leagues.
