Premier League Clubs Lose Over £1 Billion Due to Player Injuries

Premier League clubs have spent more than £1 billion on wages for injured players over the past five years, highlighting the significant financial burden injuries impose on top-flight football. The findings come from Howden’s Men’s European Football Injury Index 2024-25, which examines the economic impact of injuries across Europe’s elite leagues.

Across the top five European leagues—England, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy—there were 22,596 reported injuries over five seasons, resulting in nearly £3 billion in costs. Premier League teams accounted for almost a quarter of these injuries, with average seasonal expenditure on sidelined players reaching £237.78 million.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United consistently faced injury costs above the league average, with Manchester United leading at £154.51 million over five seasons. These figures underscore the high stakes of squad management and the financial consequences of a physically demanding calendar.

The 2024-25 season revealed an interesting trend: although the number of injuries increased across Europe’s top leagues, total costs for major clubs fell by £138.34 million, suggesting improved squad rotation, medical management, or strategic player use. Younger players, particularly those under 21 with significant playing time, were identified as the most vulnerable to injuries, highlighting concerns about the development and workload of emerging talent.

Experts emphasize that the report reflects the growing physical demands of elite football and serves as a critical tool for clubs, players, and governing bodies. With schedules becoming increasingly congested and game intensity rising, injury management remains a major challenge for the future of professional football.
