MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: AWAY WIN

---

After half-an-hour in Dresden, St. Pauli had a 3-0 lead and looked like they could cruise into the international break on a winning note. Instead, Jos Luhukay’s squad failed to send another shot goalward the balance of the match while Dresden chipped away at the deficit and ultimately equalized to secure a point. St. Pauli is getting a few of their offensive options back from injury, but four defenders still remain unavailable to Luhukay. The acquisition of Swedish fullback Sebastian Ohlsson gives the team at least one more experienced defender to help on the back end and hopefully begin to lower the rate of two goals allowed per match.

Hamburg is currently the undisputed class of the 2. Bundesliga after arriving at the break unbeaten and on a four-match winning streak. The 3-0 win in their meeting with northern rival Hannover was their third shutout of the streak, as well as the third time they posted at least three goals. They have scored more and conceded fewer goals than anyone in the division, posting a gaudy +10 goal-differential after just five league matches. Hamburg has put the league on notice that they intend to leave for the Bundesliga at the end of the season.

Even if fully healthy in defense, St. Pauli would struggle to compete with a team of Hamburg’s quality. Hamburg has build a squad with an eye toward promotion, but won’t be overlooking an opportunity to show their local rival who the big football club in town is. Derbys can be tough and deliver unexpected results at times, but Hamburg is going to overrun St. Pauli on Monday night.

SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST HALF HAD - AWAY

---

Coming off the break with a deep roster, Hamburg boss Dieter Hecking will have plenty of healthy and rested options for the matchday’s marquee fixture. Newcomer Martin Harnik already has shown he can score for Hamburg, doing so in a test against Wolfsburg during the break, but even without Harnik, they’re scoring in bunches. With motivation against a short-handed defense, this could get lopsided quickly.

HEAD TO HEAD

Hamburg has  4-0 win at St. Pauli in March last season.
