There are a lot of potential absentees for Goteborg, including strikers Robin Soder and Lasse Vibe who are both doubts and would be missed.

Malmo have influential midfielder Fouad Bachirou sidelined for this league game.

Injured/unavailable: None

Goteborg go into this league game having played Norrkoping just three days beforehand, winning 3-1. The result puts them on 16 point after eight league games which is more than impressive seeing as they were tipped for a relegation fight by many and have been without several key players since the start of the season. However, they will have had 24 hours less rest than Malmo ahead of their midweek league fixture and with doubts on the fitness of Lasse Vibe, Robin Soder and several others there could be some tired legs in the home team. On the other hand, Goteborg have won all of their home games in the league so far, scoring nine goals along the way and just conceding one.

Malmo have been gathering pace lately, with five wins and a draw in their last six games in the league. Last weekend they beat Elfsborg 4-1 after two goals from Markus Rosenberg and a goal each from Soren Rieks and Anders Christiansen. Malmo are top of the league going into round nine and they are looking to stay there for the rest of the season. With Rosenberg’s strength and the wingers’ pace on the flanks the club will be hoping to take advantage of the home team’s tired legs.

This is a rivalry between the two most successful clubs in the history of Swedish football, which goes back a long way. The clubs have been going in different directions over the last couple of years but Goteborg are finally looking to be getting back to being title contenders. Their record against Malmo has been decent in recent years, but with them playing a tough league contest against Norrkoping just days prior I think Malmo should edge this.

There have been over 2.5 total goals in all of Goteborg’s three home league matches and they have scored at least three goals along the way. Three of Malmo’s last four league games have seen more than 2.5 total goals, too. Expect to see a continuation of that pattern.

Last year the teams won one away league fixture each. Despite their dominance in the league over the last five years, Malmo have only won twice in the last five league meetings with Goteborg, drawing twice and losing once.
