Match analysis:

The Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in Egypt soon. After publishing my Asian Cup preview, I am honored to be able to share my view once again with readers of Win Magazine. I hope my insights can act as a helpful guide for all of you.

The Africa Cup of Nations has seldom been the favourite tournament for many of the fans, perhaps because of its limited coverage and publicity. The tournament is famous for its fast pace gameplay as well as its high physical demand for the players. Thus, for fans who enjoy a game of high mobility, The Africa Cup of Nations is definitely not the tournament to miss. This year, with the Africa Cup of Nations expanding its participating teams from 16 to 24 for the first time, we will be likely to see a raise in terms of competitiveness. All of the 24 teams rank higher than Hong Kong in world rankings, with Senegal, Nigeria and Egypt in particular placed amongst top 60. For Asian team, there is a lot to learn from their African counterparts in terms of tactics and the speed of transitional play. African opponents are increasingly popular for Asian team, like Japan or South Korea, when it comes to deciding who to play against in international friendlies. I am sure east Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam or even Hong Kong will follow this lead in the future.

For the opening match, Egypt will be hosting Zimbabwe in group A. I tip Egypt to be the biggest favorite to win the tournament this year for two reasons. Firstly, many Egyptian players and fans are still feeling frustrated their lost to Cameroon in the last Africa Cup of Nations final. This time the host nation vow to step up their game for a better performance. Secondly, they will surely be taking the full advantage of being able to play at home soil. In addition to all 3 group stage games, if the Pharaohs manage to qualify to the knock-out rounds as group winner, they will be able to play all their games at the Borg El Arab Stadium, which will surely be a delightful scenario for the team as they can be spared the trouble of travelling. It will also mean that the home fans can get more comfortable with the stadium as they cheer for their national heroes.

Spearheaded by one of the tournament's biggest star Mohamed Salah, Egypt is blessed with a squad of quality players with the likes of Aston Villa's right back Ahmed Elmohamady, West Bromwich's defender Ahmed Hegazy and Arsenal's midfielder Mohamed Elneny, all of them have plenty of experience playing in top tier European leagues. Egypt play a rather different approach of football when compared with the rest of the African teams. Its continental European playing style means the they favor teamwork over individualistic play. This philosophy is also the main reason why Egyptian football has been so successful in recent years.

A typical African team on its own right, Zimbabwe consists mostly of players playing for domestic clubs. Anderlecht striker and Zimbabwe's top scorer Knowledge Musona, is one of the exception, so as Nyasha Liberty Mushekwi who plays for Dalian Yifang in the Chinese Super League. I have seen him scoring the winner at a CSL game between Dalian and Shandong in person. A typical powerful No.9 with pace and a great header of the ball, he is without doubt the key player in Zimbabwe's counter attack tactics.  However, question remains as whether he can be breakthrough opponent's defense single-handedly without quality service from his teammates. Generally speaking, we might see quite an open game between the two. Although Egypt may be tempted to reserve their energy as they keep another eye on the following match-up against group contender Congo DR. Thus, I don't think there will be a huge scoreline. I bet Egypt to win 2:0 in the opening game.
