AFC Eskilstuna have signed experienced goalkeeper Ole Soderberg as a replacement for Gianluca Curci. Striker Denni Avdic has arrived from AIK Solna.

Goteborg are financially strained and have been limited to low-profile signings. Three midfielders, Junes Barny, Nzuzi Toko and Sebastian Eriksson, have arrived on free transfers. Giannis Anestis is the new goalkeeper and the Greek also arrives on a free transfer.

Newcomers AFC Eskilstuna look better prepared for life in the top flight than they did 2017, their only previous season in the league. They came last that year and only managed 20 points. However, the side have made some sensible signings this time around: Ole Soderberg is an experienced goalkeeper who has played over 50 league games for Kalmar in the top flight; striker Denni Avdic has arrived on a free transfer after being released by champions AIK Solna, with the former Werder Bremen player bringing an edge to the attacking play; finally, defender Felix Michel and midfielder Anel Raskaj are expected to be other key players this year. The season has started brightly for the side as they are in the final of the Swedish cup after knocking out Norrkoping in the group stage and then going on to beat AIK Solna on penalties in the semi-final after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Lifting that title would secure a Europa League spot and much focus will be on the final, but they will also be out to prove themselves in the league from the start.

Goteborg have long endured financial problems and manager Poya Asbaghi has had to build a squad on limited resources. Free transfers have been the focus during the winter break. They have lost defender Emil Salomonsson to Japanese side Hiroshima while Tobias Hysen and David Boo Wiklander have retired. The squad looks really thin even if Sebastian Eriksson, Robin Soder and Giannis Anestis are experienced players. The club was kicked out of the Swedish cup after crowd trouble in the derby against Gais and friendlies have seen mixed results, but a loss to newcomers Falkenbergs and a slim 1-0 victory against second-tier side Orgryte do not impress.

These two teams will likely find themselves at the bottom of the table come November. However, home advantage and more confidence give AFC Eskilstuna the edge against a Goteborg outfit that looks desperately in need of reinforcements.

Goteborg have not impressed during preseason and have had problems scoring goals. AFC Eskilstuna have scored 11 goals so far regular time in the Swedish cup and Denni Avdic looks inspired up front. I expect the home side to break the deadlock.

AFC Eskilstuna and Goteborg have played each other twice in league action. That was in 2017, with the encounters ending in a home win for AFC Eskilstuna and a draw at Goteborg.
