TEAM NEWS

Wellington loses Tim Payne after he was sent off in the 4-2 loss at Perth Glory last round.

City still have defensive issues with Harrison Delbridge to serve the second game of his two-game ban, while backline pair Jack Hendry and Richard Windbichler are sidelined with injuries.

Wellington Phoenix

Suspended: Tim Payne

Doubtful: None

Injured/unavailable: Louis Fenton (shoulder), Walter Scott (knee)

Melbourne City

Suspended: Harrison Delbridge

Doubtful: None

Injured/unavailable: Richard Windbichler (hamstring), Jack Hendry (knee)

MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Fourth-placed Wellington are six points behind second-placed City, so this is a crucial match in the top two race. Phoenix went down 4-2 to Perth last round but had enjoyed a good run where they’d lost only once across 11 matches. Wellington are unbeaten in their past six home league matches (one of the matches took place on neutral ground).

City got back to winning ways with their 2-1 triumph over Victory last round, after going four matches collecting only five points. City’s away record in league play isn’t great, winning three times from eight trips, losing three times.

Wellington’s home form has been strong lately, winning their past three in the New Zealand capital, so I’ll back them to win this.

SECOND PREDICTION: HILO – HIGH

City are the top scoring side on the road in league action this season, with 16 goals but they’ve also shipped 14 goals from eight matches. Wellington aren’t shy, with 13 strikes in their eight home league matches, suggesting there will be goals in this.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Remarkably, the home side has won the past seven encounters between these two clubs. The last time City won in Wellington was February 2017.
