Wolfsburg won’t have Victor Osimhen, Riechedly Bazoer, Marcel Tisserand, Admir Mehmedi and Paul Jaeckel at their disposal. However, coach Bruno Labbadia can count on the same XI who won their important last home game of the regular season against Cologne on Saturday.
Holstein Kiel will have to do without the long-term absentee Dominik Schmidt as well as the freshly injured Dominick Drexler, Christopher Lenz and Patrick Herrmann.

Top-flight outfit Wolfsburg head into the first leg of the promotion/relegation playoffs in average shape, having won only one of their last five (one draw, three defeats). Thanks to an excellent 4-1 victory over Cologne on the final day of the regular season, they avoided direct relegation and secured 16th place, hence booking their place in the playoffs. Since taking over at Volkswagen Arena, Bruno Labbadia has won two, drawn three and lost six of his 11 matches as head coach.
Holstein Kiel ultimately ran out of steam in the hunt for second spot in the 2. Bundesliga, but Markus Anfang’s men will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in these two playoff matches. After getting the campaign off to an incredible start, Kiel, experienced a slump at the beginning of the year, but overall they have impressed, winning 14, drawing 14 and losing only six of their 34 league encounters to finish third. The team have lost just one of their last ten league games (five wins, four draws) and claimed an impressive 6-2 victory at home against relegated Braunschweig on the final day.
Despite Kiel’s excellent form and impressive goal count of 71 in 34 games, Wolfsburg should have the quality to stop their opponents’ strong attack and seal a narrow win.
Wolfsburg have been drawing at half time in three of their last four league home matches. I fancy another draw at the break at Volkswagen Arena on Thursday.
These two have only met in Germany’s lower leagues, with Wolfsburg winning one and losing one on home soil, but both matches took place many years ago.
