Osnabruck head into their return to 2. Bundesliga having split a pair of test matches against Bundesliga sides, falling 3-0 to Cologne, but beating Werder Bremen 1-0. The VfL ran away with the 3. Liga title last season, but will find the competition in the second division to be much stiffer as they attempt to avoid a direct relegation.

Heidenheim will be riding fairly high when they arrive to Osnabruck thanks to a 5-1 drubbing of English club Middlesbrough. Trainer Frank Schmidt’s club shows every indication of continuing their late-season surge of last season that saw them challenge late for a promotion spot, finishing just two points out of the top three.

Osnabruck will likely be boosted by being at home to start their bid to stay in the second division, but with their injury woes, the visitors from Heidenheim should be able to outclass their hosts and take all three points.

While Middlesbrough technically scored first in the aforementioned test match, it was an own goal, so only Heidenheim players found the goal in their final test of the summer. With Osnabruck playing their first match after promotion and doing so while missing three regulars in defense, it should surprise nobody if Heidenheim gets an early goal on their way to a comfortable win.

All eight league meetings of the two clubs have taken place in 3. Liga, making this their first 2. Bundesliga clash. Osnabruck has never lost at home to Heidenheim and holds a 4-2-2 record over their guests.
