MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Under new trainer Tim Walter, Stuttgart is playing a very active style of football with a strong emphasis on scoring chances during pre-season matches. The challenge in adapting to the new philosophy appears to have had the effect of letting the players shake any lingering disappointment from last season’s relegation and focus on the task at hand. As the highest finisher among the relegated teams, Stuttgart was bound to be the 2. Bundesliga title favorite, but their summer has cemented them as the team to beat.

Hannover fell 1-0 to FC Groningen on Saturday pre-season match. In their summer finale against Groningen, goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler made several huge saves to keep Hannover in the match, while his teammates were getting grossly outperformed. Mirko Slomka’s side has the look of one still trying to find their way under a new trainer.

Both sides are favored to be involved in the 2. Bundesliga promotion fight, which makes this an ideal fixture to feature as the season opener. Stuttgart, though, is the heavy preseason favorite to win the league. The VfB is showing every indication of being ready to move on from their disappointing relegation fate, while Hannover looks very much like a work in progress. Take Stuttgart to make a statement under the Friday night lights.

SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST TEAM TO SCORE - STUTTGART

Stuttgart’s new style of play under Walter has resulted in an increase in scoring chances. Additionally, Stuttgart has scored first in five of the last seven league meetings between the two clubs.

HEAD TO HEAD

The teams split their two meetings in last year’s Bundesliga, each winning at home.
