Veracruz produced a dismal run in the Clausura league last season. The club secured no wins,

four draws and 13 losses in league action. To avoid relegation, Veracruz paid a fee to remain in the Mexican top flight. New manager Enrique Meza will need to enact a major tactical overhaul if they are to avoid the same fate this season. However, the club have made some interesting signings and will look to new arrivals Gaspar Iniguez and Abraham Gonzalez to provide leadership in midfield.

Pachuca lost their first game of the Apertura league as they were beaten 3-1 at home against Club Leon. The hosts conceded first-half goals to Ismael Sosa and Jose Juan Macias and were unable to recover. Although Franco Jara netted an 80th minute penalty for Pachuca, Club Leon’s Leonardo Ramos replied with a late right-foot strike that secured victory for the opposition. It was a disappointing start to the season for Martin Palermo’s side, who will now look to recover with a strong showing against Veracruz.

Despite losing their opening game to Club Leon, Pachuca will enter the league match against Veracruz as the clear favourites. Palermo has a formidable squad with frightening attacking potential, whereas Veracruz were plagued by defensive weaknesses last season, conceding a league-high 34 goals in their 17 league matches. Given Pachuca’s record in the Clausura stage, where they finished seventh, an away win looks the most probable outcome here.

Pachuca scored the opening goal in ten of their 17 matches in the league stage of the Clausura season. On the other hand, Veracruz conceded the opener in 13 of their 17 games in the top flight. With that in mind, an opening goal from Pachuca would come as no surprise.

Pachuca have won six and lost one of their past seven league meetings against Veracruz. The hosts claimed an impressive 9-2 victory over Veracruz when the teams last played in the league in April.
