Argentine Division 1 -- Velez Sarsfield VS Lanus

Velez Sarsfield coach Gabriel Heinze will be missing the suspended Hernan Fuente who picked up his fifth yellow card away at Independiente last weekend. Key player Matias Vargas will likely miss out due to an ankle problem. Lanus centre back Marco Torsiglieri is still considered doubtful due to his muscle problem.

Velez Sarsfield

Suspended: Hernan Fuente

Doubtful: Matias Vargas (ankle)

Injured/unavailable: Fabian Cubero (knee)

Suspended: None

Doubtful: Marco Torsiglieri (muscle), Sebastian Ribas (back)

Injured/unavailable: Nicolas Thaller (knee), Guillermo Sara (wrist), Facundo Monteseirin (knee ligament)

Despite opening the scoring in the eighth minute, Velez Sarsfield couldn’t hold onto their lead and ended up losing 2-1 at Independiente last weekend. With eight points separating them from the top four, the team are no longer in with a chance of qualifying for the 2020 Copa Libertadores via the league. Having claimed a single victory in the last four league matches (one draw, two defeats), El Fortin are in sixth with 37 points, which is still a good campaign for Gabriel Heinze’s men. They have been particularly strong on their own turf, having lost only two of their 12 home league matches, along with seven wins and three draws.

Lanus leapfrogged four teams last weekend to climb into the last Copa Sudamericana spot on 34 points thanks to a 3-1 home win over relegation-threatened Belgrano. El Granate have produced an excellent campaign in 2019, with six victories, one draw and only two defeats. On the road, they have seen mixed results, having beaten Godoy Cruz and San Martin Tucuman but lost to Boca Juniors and Union Santa Fe in their four most recent away league outings.

This will be a clash between two interesting sides, but I think Velez Sarsfield will make home advantage count. I expect the hosts to win here.

Velez Sarsfield have hit first in their last three home league matches. I think they can do it again this weekend.

Both sides have claimed two victories in the last five league meetings, along with one draw.
