Vasco da Gama finally produced a positive display last weekend when hosting Internacional in league action, as they defeated their opponents 2-1. They started the league game brilliantly, threatening the visiting team with quick passes but only managed to get past the opposition’s goalkeeper two minutes before half time: Midfielder Andrey broke the deadlock with a low driven shot and forward Tiago Reis doubled their lead after a good individual effort. Internacional pulled one goal back in the 56th minute, but Vasco da Gama were defending well and didn’t let the visitors equalise. It was their first league win this season after eight rounds, but having drawn three and lost four of the other seven league matches, they still find themselves in the relegation zone.

Ceara hosted Bahia in their last league outing but couldn’t avoid an unwanted goalless draw. They controlled the league match throughout the 90 minutes and had 22 chances, but none of their four attackers who featured was able to reach the back of the net. The opposition’s goalkeeper, meanwhile, enjoyed a brilliant performance, saving all of Ceara’s shots on goal. Wing back Samuel Xavier was the hosts’ best player on the pitch once again, but he received a yellow card in the second half and is suspended against Vasco da Gama. After two winless fixtures in the league (one draw, one loss), the side are now in mid-table with ten points from a possible 24.

Vasco da Gama have finally won after kicking off the league campaign with disastrous performances, and the fact that they dismantled a top six side last time out is all the more impressive. They will now host Ceara, who have lost two and won only one of their three away league fixtures this season, with that victory taking place against bottom-of-the-league Avai. It is a huge chance for Vasco da Gama to keep their good form running and to make it back-to-back victories here. I think we will see a home win.

Vasco da Gama have never been behind at half time at home in league action and they scored two first-half goals against Internacional last weekend. Ceara have not managed to score within the first 45 minutes of their last three league games. I think the hosts will be ahead at the break.

Both league encounters between Ceara and Vasco da Gama last season ended in draws.
