MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: AWAY WIN

The Vancouver Whitecaps suffered a 3-0 home meltdown against Sporting Kansas City in the league last weekend. They tried to turn things around in midweek with a trip to New England and at the final whistle they left the pitch with a 4-0 league loss for their fourth straight league loss and seven league game without a win (three draws, four losses). The result leaves the club with 20 points in the Western Conference and while the playoffs aren't out of reach Vancouver will need to start picking up points on a more consistent basis if they hope to reach the postseason.

The San Jose Earthquakes won their second consecutive league match as they outplayed and outscored the LA Galaxy to the tune of 3-1 on the road last weekend. San Jose trailed after just two minutes but they were able to bounce back with goals by Valeri Kazaishvili, Danny Hoesen and Jackson Yueill in the 61st, 64th and 85th minutes. San Jose was all over the Galaxy and forced man of the match and goalkeeper David Bingham into making 14 saves. The team has shot up the Western table with eight wins, four draws and just two losses in their past 14 league fixtures. They have 31 points and sit in a playoff spot.

These two teams appear to be heading in different directions lately with the San Jose Earthquakes climbing the table and the Vancouver Whitecaps slipping. With the hosts being poor at home I like the chances of an away victory.

SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST HALF HAD – DRAW

The San Jose Earthquakes have been a good first-half away team this year and have trailed after 45 minutes just twice in nine away league games. The Vancouver Whitecaps have trailed just three times at the break in 11 home league games. I like the looks of this match being level at half time.

HEAD TO HEAD

The teams met three times in the league during the last campaign with the Vancouver Whitecaps winning 2-1 at home and 3-2 away whilst also drawing 2-2 in Vancouver.
