Australia A-League---Sydney FC VS Perth Glory

Sydney FC are likely to be without left back Michael Zullo again after picking up a hamstring problem in last week’s AFC Champions League clash at home against Shanghai SIPG. Alex Brosque has a bruised heel, but coach Steve Corica said he should be okay for this league game.

The Perth Glory players may be nursing hangovers after clinching the premiership last weekend. Socceroo Chris Ikonomidis may return from a shoulder issue, although he won’t be risked.

Sydney FC

Suspended: None

Doubtful: Alex Brosque (heel)

Injured/unavailable: Trent Buhagiar (anterior cruciate ligament); Chris Zuvela, Ben Warland (both knee); Michael Zullo (hamstring)

Perth Glory

Suspended: None

Doubtful: Chris Ikonomidis (shoulder)

Injured/unavailable: Alex Grant (thigh)

Second-placed Sydney FC stumbled to a 1-1 draw in the league with rivals Western Sydney Wanderers in the last round, meaning they surrendered any hope of beating Perth Glory to the premiership and opening up an eight-point gap. More significantly, third-placed Melbourne Victory moved to within two points of Sydney FC in the race for a top two spot, which has heated up with two league games to play. Sydney FC are unbeaten in their past three league matches (two wins, one draw).

Premiers Perth Glory celebrated their maiden piece of Australian top-flight silverware last weekend, so the quick turnaround for this league match won’t be easy. Glory are deserved champions and their recent form is excellent, winning back-to-back league matches over the Central Coast Mariners away (3-0) and the Newcastle Jets at home (1-0). They are also unbeaten away from home in the league all season (eight wins, four draws).

I expect some let-up from Perth Glory after finally securing the premiership and with Sydney FC desperate to secure a top two spot, they will get the win.

Sydney FC have only scored eight first-half goals in 12 home league matches this season, while Perth Glory have only conceded five first-half goals in 12 away league matches this season. Glory have also kept three clean sheets in three of their past four league matches, so defensively they are tight. As a result, I’m expecting this league match to be locked up at the interval.

Perth Glory ended Sydney FC’s recent dominance, having won nine league meetings in a row, when Glory knocked off Sydney 3-1 in Western Australia in January.
