Ben Warland is out for the season for Sydney FC with an anterior cruciate ligament injury but Dutch marquee Siem de Jong is back and available having scored off the bench in the last round.

Melbourne Victory are at full strength.

Second-placed Sydney FC claimed a 3-1 league win at Brisbane Roar in the last round to snap a three-game winless run in all competitions (one draw, two losses). The result, combined with Melbourne Victory’s 2-0 triumph at Perth Glory, closed the gap at the summit to six points, keeping the premiership race alive, so motivation will be extremely high. Sydney FC have won three and lost only one of their past four league matches.

Third-placed Melbourne Victory will be buoyed by their 2-0 away win over leaders Perth Glory in the last round and determined to boost their top two hopes against their Big Blue rivals. The team are currently one point behind Sydney FC, but fresh from back-to-back league wins.

Melbourne Victory’s best XI has scared people all season and finally they have got a clean bill of health. Their win over Perth Glory was a sign of their strength and I’m backing them to win at Sydney FC, who have only won once in their past three home league matches (one draw, one loss).

The past three regular league encounters between these two clubs have all ended with an odd score. I’m taking the 50-50 punt that that run will continue.

Melbourne Victory have won their past two regular league encounters and were also victorious in a famous preliminary final win in Sydney last season, beating them 3-2 in extra time after a 2-2 draw in the first 90 minutes.
