MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN

Sparta Rotterdam experienced a complete and utter off day last week. They lost their composure after Helmond were awarded a dodgy penalty in the 23rd minute, but being the very first team to lose against that side in the league this season, and by a 3-0 scoreline. Sparta conceded a second goal in the 62nd minute and a third in the 78th minute. It was the club's second league loss of the season, with their first defeat coming in the opening round away at Twente. It means they had been unbeaten for 14 league matches, winning nine and drawing five.

Almere City were also involved in an unexpected result last week as they were held to a draw away at Telstar, the hosts' first such result in the league since the beginning of the season. Almere struggled throughout and will probably not have too many complaints about the eventual outcome. It took the home side until the 53rd minute to find the net before the visitors equalised late through Andreas Calcan. The attacking midfielder scored his fourth goal of the season in the 85th minute. Almere are now in a decent sixth position, just five points behind leaders Den Bosch.

I’m expecting a home win because of Sparta Rotterdam’s good home league record. They did slip up in a 0-0 draw against Jong PSV Eindhoven in their previous home league match, but this – so far – has been the only league game they have not won on their own turf.  Almere’s away league record is decent with four wins, two draws and only two defeats. However, they have won only one from their last five league games on the road (two draws, two losses), and that was a win over lowly Helmond Sport. A home win is on the cards.

SECOND PREDICTION: CORRECT SCORE – 2-0

Sparta Rotterdam have conceded no goals in five of their eight home league games and have won both of their last two league victories by two goals. I'm going with a 2-0 win for the home side.

HEAD TO HEAD

Sparta Rotterdam have won five and lost one of their six league meetings with Almere City on Rotterdam soil, with their most recent home league encounter a 3-2 win for Sparta in November 2015.
