Sheff Wednesday will field an almost unchanged starting XI for the visit of rivals Barnsley with just one swap – Cameron Dawson replaces Keiren Westwood in between the sticks after the Irishman was sent off against Reading. Almen Abdi is back in training following a hamstring problem but won’t feature. Midfielder Massimo Luongo joined from QPR earlier in the week and will at least make the bench here.

Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel will be without Kenny Dougall and Jacob Brown for the trip to Hillsborough and will opt for an unchanged side following their opening day upset against Fulham.

Sheff Wednesday interim boss Lee Bullen was delighted with his side’s performance as they took apart a toothless Reading side away from home on the opening weekend. The Owls have won eight and lost just two of their last 14 home league matches and will be confident of another positive result here after coping well with the threat of Mo Barrow and Yakou Meite last time out.

Barnsley upset all the odds as they held out for a well-deserved 1-0 home win against a Fulham side tipped for promotion by many last weekend. Daniel Stendel’s summer recruits Bambo Diaby and Mads Andersen slotted perfectly into the defence and showed why Barnsley boasted the best defence in League One last season, conceding just 39 goals across the Tykes’ 46 matches. The Yorkshire side will now be fearless as they travel to Hillsborough.

Only three Championship sides collected more draws across the 2018/19 season than Sheff Wednesday (16) and only five collected more than Barnsley (13) did in League One last season and with both sides looking to consolidate and steady the ship after impressive opening day performances, a draw looks likely here.

This heated rivalry rarely produces high scoring encounters with just one of the last eight fixtures between these two sides producing over 2.5 goals. Four of the last six matches between the pair have ended in a 1-1 draw including all of the last three and with both sides desperate not to lose this grudge match, another stalemate is likely.

Barnsley are winless in ten league matches against their fiercest rivals but will see this as their best chance to beat the Owls in recent times. The last three league games between the pair have all ended 1-1 but Sheff Wednesday had won five of the seven derby league matches prior.
