MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: DRAW

Real Salt Lake probably surprised even themselves last weekend with a thorough 4-0 home league win over Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union. They dominated the league game with goals from man of the match Jefferson Savarino in the 23rd and 71st minutes followed by strikes from Albert Rusnak and Damir Kreilach in the 81st and 89th minutes. Real's last three league wins have been clean sheets with goalkeeper Nick Rimando posting them. They now have six wins, three losses and a draw in their past ten league contests. The team climbed to 29 points and are just hanging onto a playoff spot in the West.

Minnesota Utd left it late but they managed to pull out a 1-0 home win over FC Dallas last weekend for their fourth straight league conquest. Substitute Mason Toye scored the lone goal of the contest in the first minute of injury time. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone then preserved the victory and clean sheet by saving a penalty kick in the dying seconds of the league game. Mannone made six saves during the clash to also earn man of the match honours and Toye has now scored two straight game winners. The side’s winning streak is well timed as it comes after a three-game losing skid in league action. Minnesota has 33 points and occupy a top-seven playoff spot in the West.

Real Salt Lake is a strong home side with just two losses and seven wins in nine league matches, but Minnesota Utd has been enjoying an impressive winning streak. I think that will cancel each other out with the league match ending in a draw.

SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST HALF HAD – HOME WIN

Real Salt Lake has never been drawn at half time at home in the league this year while Minnesota Utd has led just once on the road at half time in league action. I expect Real Salt Lake to be in front after 45 minutes.

HEAD TO HEAD

Last year's league meetings resulted in a 1-1 draw in Salt Lake City and a 3-2 home triumph for Minnesota Utd. The teams have met just five times in the league with Minnesota winning two, losing one and drawing one.
