TEAM NEWS

Preston completed the signing of highly-rated Coventry midfielder Tom Bayliss at the weekend and the England youth international will likely be handed a debut as Preston host Wigan this weekend. The hosts have no injury concerns.

Egyptian international midfielder Sam Morsy missed Wigan’s opening day win over Cardiff with a knock and remains doubtful for Saturday’s trip to Deepdale. New signing Jamal Lowe was named on the bench last weekend but could start here having put a full week of training behind him.

MATCH PREVIEW

MAIN PREDICTION: AWAY WIN

Preston created little going forward last weekend, managing just five shots and only one shot on target against a Millwall side who are expected to be languishing in the bottom third of the table this season (losing 1-0). The Lilywhites had 62.8% of possession against Millwall but looked stale and bereft of ideas with the ball at their feet and will likely struggle again against a Wigan side who will set up in a similar way. The arrival of Tom Bayliss will help this but the youngster will need time to adapt to Alex Neil’s system.

Wigan, on the other hand, blew everyone away on the opening day as they edged past a talented Cardiff side tipped for a top six finish in an entertaining 3-2 win. The Latics struggled defensively on the road last season conceding an average of 1.91 goals per game, but will take confidence from Preston’s opening day woes – a potential hangover from last season when the Lilywhites ended the campaign with six defeats, one draw and a defeat.

Momentum is a huge factor in the Championship and the away side have all the momentum heading into this clash. The Latics went unbeaten for the final five games of last season, winning three and will be full of confidence after winning again on the opening day.

SECOND PREDICTION: ODD/EVEN - ODD

52% of Preston produced an odd number of goals last season in the Championship, while 54% of Wigan’s produced an odd number . Both sides’ opening day fixtures produced odd goals and I’d expect the same here.

HEAD TO HEAD

Wigan have enjoyed the better record of these two sides in recent times with the Latics coming out on top in four and drawing two of the last eight league matches between these two clubs. Last season’s meetings produced two engaging affairs with Preston thumping Wigan 4-0 at home before losing 2-0 in the return game at the DW Stadium.
