The Portland Timbers finally held their league home opener at Providence Park earlier this month after posting four wins, two draws and six losses on their league-record 12-match road trip to kick off the season. Things didn't go as planned, however, as they were edged 3-2 by visiting Los Angeles FC, the league's top team. Portland will have a flurry of home contests in league action over the second half of the season and they will need to take advantage of the situation as they are in last place in the Western Conference with 14 points. They have scored 19 goals and allowed 26 against in 13 league games.

The Houston Dynamo had to settle for a 1-1 home draw with Sporting Kansas City in their last league match at the start of June. Houston still sit relatively comfortable in the playoff zone in the Western Conference in league action, with 24 points from seven wins, three draws and three defeats. They are one of the league's best defensive sides with just 14 goals against in 13 league games while scoring 21 themselves. They are winless in the last two league games though (one draw, one loss) and have scored just once in those contests.

The Portland Timbers were unlucky against Los Angeles FC in their home league opener and they should be anxious to make up for it with a determined effort against a Houston Dynamo side that has a lone away win in league action, having lost their other three away league games. Look for the homes team to take all three points.

Just two of the last ten league meetings between these sides have produced fewer than three total goals and I expect that trend to continue here with at least three total goals in it.

The clubs played to a 1-1 league draw in Houston in May. Each team won their home league fixture last year.
