Socceroo Chris Ikonomidis suffered a worrying shoulder problem in Perth Glory’s 3-0 win at the Central Coast Mariners and is in doubt.

Newcastle Jets marquee Ronald Vargas was replaced at half time in the last round but should be okay after hamstring issues.

Leaders Perth Glory are on the cusp of glory, holding a six-point buffer from second-placed Sydney FC with three league games to play. Glory also play Sydney in the penultimate round but can seal the premiership if they beat the Newcastle Jets and the Sky Blues slip up this weekend. Glory’s only two league losses this season have been at home, although they were against their nearest rivals, not midtable opposition.

Newcastle Jets coach Ernie Merrick already conceded his seventh-placed team won’t make the finals prior to last round’s 3-2 league win over Western Sydney Wanderers, which snapped a two-game losing run in the league and kept them mathematically alive. Newcastle are seven points behind sixth-placed Melbourne City, so they must win to stay in the finals race. They have lost seven, won four and drawn one of their 12 away league matches this season. (one of the matches played on neutral ground)

Ladder standings provide great information at this time of the season, so I think Perth Glory will be too strong.

The past three league meetings between these two clubs have all ended 2-0 to Perth Glory. The team have also kept clean sheets in five of their past six wins and are averaging two goals per league game at home this season, with 24 strikes in 12 league matches at HBF Park. Everything points to a 2-0 Perth win.

Perth Glory have won their past three league encounters, although the Newcastle Jets won 2-1 in Perth last season.
